The backlash came entirely because of the way Itunes decided to force U2 into people's music library, and that many devices had settings that meant they downloaded the album automatically onto phones, computers etc. U2 didn't decide the mechanics of how music files are distributed over Apple's network - they intended to do a business deal where Apple could get U2's music to use as they pleased, and U2 could get exposure to Apple's customer base. U2 sold Itunes their album as a package for somewhere in the region of $100 million. I thought it was an interesting lesson in how people see the companies that deliver content to us.
